The holiday season is quickly approaching and will be here before we know it! It’s also nearing the end of the year and it’s time to use up the rest of your vacation days (especially if your company doesn’t let you carry them over from year to year).

I’ve talked about vacation days before on here, like why it is so important to take time off and also how you can maximize your day off. With the weather getting cooler and the holiday season approaching, I wanted to share some ways you can make the most of those remaining PTO days, even if you’re not planning to go on vacation.

Do Some Holiday Shopping

The holiday season is upon us, which means there are lots of sales going on and it’s a great way to spend your much-needed time off! I also love the act of going shopping for all the gifts that I get for family and friends during the holiday season, so I love using my left over vacation days for some holiday shopping 🙂 Plus it’s nice not having to deal with the weekend crowds during the week!

Go to Lunch with a Friend

Is there a friend you haven’t seen in awhile or just want to catch up with a close friend? See if they are available and go out to lunch or plan a dinner with them! The best part about having a day off is doing something you don’t normally get to do during the weekdays. I love going out to lunch when I’m off with a close friend to catch up and it’s also so nice to not really have a time limit like you do when you’re on a lunch break.

Take a Yoga Class

Vacation days are meant to help you de-stress and not worry about anything work-related, so take some time to go to a yoga class to really help you relax. Yoga has a lot of de-stressing benefits to it and it’s a great way to kick off a vacation day 🙂 Before your day off, check the schedules of yoga studios around you and reserve a spot in a class that you want to go to!

Work on a Side Hustle/Passion Project

Have a passion project that you want to spend more time on? A vacation day is perfect for putting in some hours on your side hustle, especially if it is something you’re very passionate about. It’s also a great time to work on a bigger project that you’ve been wanting to do for your side hustle or getting ahead so you can relax after those crazy work days.

Enjoy a Cup of Tea & Read a Book

I don’t know what it is about this time of the year, but with the weather getting colder all I want to do is snuggle up with a good book and a cup of tea (or coffee). There is something so peaceful about reading a book and drinking some hot tea. If this is something that you like to do, spend some time reading a new book or a current book you’re reading on your day off.

  1. This is such a good idea! My parents used to take off to go shopping and hang out together. My husband and I take a week of vacation over Christmas to go home, but I can’t wait until we can do this!

  2. This is such a great post! Most millennials forego their PTO, so I definitely love the suggestion of using it before and or during the holiday season to get that shopping accomplished. As well as for self care during such a stressful time.

  3. These are perfect ways to utilize a day off!! Especially shopping. We usually end up doing projects around the house. That list always seems to be long so getting some done during the week is so helpful!

  4. All great ways to spend time off! Although I do like working during the holidays because it’s usually pretty quiet and I can get things done on my list that kept getting pushed off!

  5. All of the above sound lovely, depending on my mood!! I have to say that sometimes I just crave being at home, having a lazy morning, making breakfast and watching tv for a bit, and then just doing what I feel like doing – whether it’s reading, re-organizing something in the house (I’m weird but I take pleasure in that haha) or working on my blog… I feel like time is a luxury and being able not to have a schedule to stick to is really amazing and relaxing!

  6. These are great ways to spend vacation days during the holidays! I completely agree with you on the shopping one, shopping is so much fun during this time of year and the weekdays are a lot less crowded and more enjoyable to do so. 🙂
