Today’s inspirational girl boss is BJ, the owner of Keisha&co. and a total boss babe in every way! I met BJ through a blogging community on Facebook and instantly fell in love with her company. She works a full-time job and currently Keisha&co. is her side hustle, which takes some serious dedication and passion. I asked BJ some questions about her business, inspiration, goals and more. Read on to find out more about this fabulous girl boss!

#1 Where did the inspiration to start Keisha&co. come from?
BJ: I have always had really troublesome skin, and struggled to find skincare that really worked – especially without flaring up my eczema. I had become increasingly interested in using natural products, particularly ones that were cruelty free and didn’t contain palm oil. A friend had got me on to essential oils, and after looking at the ingredients in the skincare I was using one day, I thought to myself – I am sure I can make this!
Once I started using it I absolutely loved it, and even better – it WORKED! So I wanted to share it with the world.

#2 Tell me more about the mission behind Keisha&co. and the skin care line you created!

BJ: The main aim behind Keisha&co. is simple: to create all-natural, all Australian, cruelty-free skincare that actually works!
As for the future, our goal is to assist in funding “The Surin Dog Project” – an incredible initiative started by my amazing, caring friend Loz and a few others; to help feed, neuter, and give veterinary care to the many street dogs in Surin, Thialand. Check them out on Facebook, it’s such an incredibly selfless thing they are doing for animals that truly need it.

#3 How did you learn to make skin care products? Were you always interested in this industry?

BJ: In all honesty, I Googled and Pinterested for HOURS ON END. There is so much information out there! I have created and tried hundreds of recipes and tested them all myself to find the perfect ones. There are heaps of short courses on cosmetic chemistry, and endless information on natural products.
Since I was a teenager I have had a big interest in skincare. Not necessarily the industry itself, but more just finding something that works! The more I looked into natural skincare and essential oils, the more interested I got – now I absolutely love it.

#4 If you could meet one girl boss, who would it be and why?

BJ: I would love to meet Zoe Foster Blake! Her branding, her products, her attitude, her humor – it’s all really refreshing. She really seems like she’s got everything all figured out.

#5 What is your favorite thing to do in your free time, when you’re not working on your business or your full-time job?

BJ: I love being outdoors, so generally if I’m not working, I’m outside camping, hiking, or just doing anything outside. I have two dogs, one of which is a very crazy one year old German Shorthaired Pointer, so I spend a lot of time exercising them, too.

#6 How do you manage working full time and owning a skin care line?

BJ: I am a super organized person, so that helps a lot! I have a calendar for promos, events, marketing, etc that I put up above my desk so that I can visualize what needs to be done and when, and I set reminders in my phone for EVERYTHING.
I do a lot with the time after dinner that’s usually marked for “TV time” to get things done, including scheduling emails and social media posts – so that through the day when I’m at my full time job, I don’t need to worry about doing anything for Keisha&co.. I just generally bring my laptop in to the family room so I don’t feel like I’m locked away in my office missing out on relax time.

#7 What are your time management tips for other young women running their own businesses?

BJ: My first and foremost is this: WRITE LISTS and COMPLETE THEM! Knowing exactly what you are up to and exactly what needs doing is critical to being productive. It also helps if you’re feeling overwhelmed with the amount of stuff that needs doing.
Secondly, is the best advice for productivity I have ever heard: set a timer. This is where your list comes in handy, so there is no time wasting. Write your list, then set your timer for an hour. Then smash out as much stuff as you can before your timer goes off. If you know you have very limited time to get everything done, chances are you will work twice as hard!

#8 What’s one quote that inspires you every day?

BJ: “Winners are not people who never fail, but people who never quit.”

#9 Walk us through a day in the life of being the owner of Keisha&co!

BJ: It’s not very glamorous, I assure you! I generally get up and make a coffee. I drink my coffee while I do my makeup, and then I stand in my wardrobe pondering what to wear for far too long. I clean up the house, feed the dogs, water the plants, and head to work.
I am generally at work half an hour early for no apparent reason other than to buy a coffee and sit at my desk and check my emails. I enjoy my “other” job – I work in Disability Employment Services.
Once I get home from work I take the dogs for a run and then cook dinner.
I then set aside about an hour or two at night to get Keisha&co. stuff done. Usually it’s making products, experimenting with new ones, scheduling posts and emails, creating new content, or preparing products for shipping the next day. Once I head to bed, I’m usually on my phone still looking for interesting articles to post, or images to save for later posting. Terrible habit, I know!

#10 What are you looking forward to in the month of May?

BJ: There are a few very exciting things coming for Keisha&co. in May! We are looking at launching two new products, and there are stockists on the horizon! But.. We can’t tell you too much… You’ll have to wait and see!
