How to Relax & De-Stress After Work

We all work so hard during the day and sometimes you just need to take a break. When we get home, we often just plop ourselves on the couch to “relax” but watching TV can be unfulfilling.

There are so many different things you can do at home after work to de-stress and relax that don’t involve watching TV. Here are some of my favorite tips for de-stressing after work and feeling more relaxed!

Talk to Your Friends & Family

I think this is so important to not only your health but also for your relationships. I love when I get to talk to my family & friends after work to see how their day was and just spend time together. Most of our time is spent at work, so it’s important to spend the free time that we have talking to our friends and family! I personally love to make sure I’m home for dinner and when at the dinner table, your phones aren’t out and the TV isn’t on. This time is reserved JUST for talking!

Work on a Passion Project

I know it seems counter intuitive to say that doing MORE work after a long day will actually help you de-stress but honestly it’s one of my favorite parts of the day! When you’re truly passionate about something, it becomes something that you look forward to. Plus, if your passion project happens to bring in some extra cash – even better!
We all deserve to love what we do and sometimes this is through a side hustle, which is totally OKAY! A side hustle can help you learn so many valuable skills that you may not get to learn in your full-time job. These skills can often be used in your full-time job, so that’s even better!
I wrote about how a side hustle can advance your career on here, so make sure to check it out if you haven’t read it already. It’s well worth the read I promise πŸ˜‰

Practice Yoga

Yoga is one of my favorite things to do after a stressful day, it helps me forget about the crazy day I had and focus on the present. It’s also great to do after sitting in a chair all day (if you work a desk job). There are so many different resources out there to practice yoga and for all different levels. Here are some of my favoriteΒ resources for yoga!
Youtube (FREE): Yoga with Adrienne, Sarah Beth Yoga, Tone It Up (Yoga & Stretching Routines)
Paid Subscriptions & DVDs:Β Tara Stiles AM/PM Yoga, Kathryn Buding Aim True Yoga DVD, YogaGlo ($18/month)
You can also find free (or cheap) yoga classes near you! I personally love looking at the events Athleta and Lululemon are offering. They typically have complimentary classes on the weekends that you can go to. Just check the calendar on their websites or Facebook page for a location near you to find out their schedule πŸ™‚

I love visiting the Athleta near my house, they always offer great workout classes!Β

Go for a Walk

I’ve written about why I love getting outside after work in my post about my tips for a better work-life balance and now that the weather is nicer, it’s the perfect time to take a walk after work! If you have dogs, this is also a great time to walk them as well and give them a little bit of exercise. Just taking some time to get outside can instantly make you feel less stressed and happier.

Schedule Something Fun During The Week

Why wait until Friday to go out to dinner with friends or go to a yoga class? Schedule something fun for yourself during the week and you’ll be looking forward to it all week. Spending time with friends or going to a favorite workout class can really help you de-stress after a long day and will make you excited for the week. We don’t all need to live for the weekend, ya know?! πŸ˜‰

  3. The side hustle comment is SO TRUE! That is what I use my blog for: a creative outlet. It does not stress me out at all to work on it. Probably because I am not stressing over trying to make money yet since I have an income already. It is my happy place and saves me from a crappy teaching day!!! xx

  4. Talking to friends always destresses me. Whether I’m talking to them about why I’m stressed or just chatting away about something unimportant,it always makes me feel better. I also like to watch TV, curl up with a good book, drink some wine or go for a walk.

  5. I love scheduling workout classes during the week! Don’t get to do it as much now that I have a little one, but it was definitely something I looked forward to mid-week. πŸ™‚

  6. Netflix and passion projects do it for me! I’ve tried yoga, but I just don’t seem to have the patience for it. Or I’m still too restless….

  8. Thanks for sharing these great tips! Personally I enjoy taking my pup Callie for a nice long walk after work. It’s such a great way to transition into the evening routine, and Callie loves it too!

  9. Social stuff can be fun, but for me sometimes it’s coming home, taking a hot shower, changing into comfy clothes, eating something great and just VEGGING. Disconnecting, too. It’s a way to recharge my batteries and feel relaxed/rejuvenated after a long work day.

  10. You are all so much more productive than I am… When I get home after a 13 hour shift I have the mental and physical capacity of a potato. Going to the gym- not an option!
