In honor of Halloween, I wanted to share some advice for dealing with “vampire” personalities at work. Chances are you have come across at least one ‘vampire’ personality before in your career or just in general during your everyday life. A vampire personality could be a grumpy boss or co-worker that makes you feel negative or unmotivated.

It’s important to know how to not let them affect your work or make you feel down on yourself. Here are some ways to deal with vampire personalities while in the office and in life.

#1 Focus on Yourself

When you feel like you’re surrounded by negative personalities, it can start to make you feel like you’re not valuable at work. This is far from true and it’s important for you to focus on yourself during these moments. Remember YOUR goals and focus on those rather than letting yourself be consumed by something negative someone says towards you,

#2 Stay Positive

It’s very easy to feel negative and depressed after someone criticizes your work or says something negative towards you but don’t let it affect your attitude! When you feel yourself getting upset, take a few deep breaths and if you have the option, get out of the office to get some fresh air. Remind yourself that you don’t need to feel negative because of someone else’s remarks or feedback. Instead, use it as a way to review the work you’ve done and see if there is anything you can improve upon.
If all else, remember this: STAY POSITIVE + OPTIMISTIC!

#3 Take a Break

Like I mentioned above, just the act of taking a quick break, even if it’s just for 2 minutes, can really make you feel much better and get you back into a positive mindset after you’ve been around a negative environment. Take your break outside and get some fresh air, studies have shown that this helps to decrease tension and anger.

#4 Don’t Take It Personally

Lastly, whenever you receive negative feedback or feel unmotivated from a discussion with a ‘vampire’ personality, remember that it is just work and don’t take it personally! Chances are the other person is stressed themselves and they are projecting their anger onto others, meaning it really has nothing to do with you. So just keep doing you and don’t let it get you down!

If only everyone we work with is positive and there isn’t any drama, but chances are you will come across this at least once in your life – if you haven’t already. Next time you are around someone with a vampire personality, remember these tips and don’t let it get to you!

I think it’s also important to recognize when we are feeling negative ourselves, because we can all have a vampire personality some times. When you feel this happening to you, try not to project it onto others and remember how you feel when other people project their stress onto you – it’s never fun!

Have you ever worked with anyone that has a vampire personality? How do you deal with these situations when they arise?

  2. This is really great advice! I have dealt with people like that and I always keep in mind that I am just the easy Target. They must have something going on in their personal life that is causing pain of some sort and if I lash out back at them it doesn’t help the situation. Great post!

  6. Great advice. I always try to stay positive or neutral at work. I’ve found that the way I respond to some of the negative personalities really impacts how the rest of the group responds. Work hard and be nice is my motto!

  7. Love these tips! Sometimes people don’t realize how important it is to take a break sometimes. I’ll find myself getting frustrated, realizing I haven’t stood up once in 4 hours. So when I do take a 5 or 10 min break it helps out a lot!
