How to Advance Your Career This Fall

Last Friday officially marked the first day of Fall and it is my absolute favorite season for so many reasons. The weather is getting colder and the leaves are starting to change colors. The Fall is also a great time to re-focus on your career goals and advance your career. Now that the summer is over and most companies are gearing up for a big fourth quarter to end the year on a high note, it is a great time to show your company just how valuable you are.

Here are some ways that you can kick your career into high gear this Fall and maybe even get that promotion or raise you’ve been wanting 🙂

Review The Goals You Made at the Beginning of the Year

Remember those career goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year? These may have been your personal career goals or goals that you set with your boss in your annual review. Bring these goals back up and review what you’ve accomplished this year and what goals you haven’t accomplished yet. Give yourself a game plan for achieving the goals and when I say game plan, I mean really sit down and set actionable steps for accomplishing the goals.

Take on a New Project

Is there a new project or task that your boss needs help with? Maybe a new client that has started? Talk to your boss about a project that you can help out with. It can even be a project that you come up with, it can even be something that you come up with to help make your team be more efficient. Show your boss that you are dedicated to the company and don’t be afraid to take on something you haven’t done before!

Learn a New Skill

Speaking of new projects, one of the best things about taking on a new project that is outside of your comfort zone is the fact that you can develop new skills! Even if the new project you’re doing doesn’t involve learning new skills (although most do no matter how seasoned you are), set a goal for yourself to learn a specific skill and figure out ways you can practice that skill! Have you always been interested in learning how to code? Start with a simple coding language like HTML or CSS. There are so many free resources out there to help you learn new skills like Coursera, Udemy and more!

Attend an Industry Networking Event

Meeting new people in your industry is always so refreshing and making more connections is always a great idea! It is also a great opportunity to get your company name out there and you never know when you could meet a potential new client or connection at another company you can partner with in the future. Before going to a networking event, make sure your LinkedIn is updated using these tips! Also make sure that you have your business cards handy before going to the networking event 🙂

So there you have it, some tips to help you advance your career this Fall! Just because this year is almost over doesn’t mean you can’t advance your career and achieve the rest of your goals, you got this girl 🙂

  1. I love revisiting my start of the year goals each season to see where I’m at. It’s a great time to reevaluate and shift the focus a bit if needed, as well!

  2. Even though I have a full-time job, my head and ‘career’ is mainly focused on my blog and I’m trying implement a strategy to grow my blog traffic and start making money from it. I just created a new strategy last night so that I can chunk my weekly to-do list into 30 minutes so that it feels more realistic and less overwhelming. Between a full-time job, going to the gym 4 times per week, and all the other ‘life’ stuff, it can be a lot so I’m hoping this new approach will help me stay organized and more systematic about implementing growth strategies!!

  3. I love your blog! This is an inspiring post. I also love fall, and here in Maine, the foliage is getting beautiful as always. I have also recently been reviewing my original 2017 goals, and my word for the year, which has been ‘breakthrough.’

I work from home, so there’s no boss to please, but I have had several clients over the course of this year so far. My biggest accomplishment this year has been earning my Doctor of Education degree, officially conferred as of June 26.

New skills I’d like to learn or new projects to do are actually related to my OTHER business, making customized quilts and other products. I’d like to learn how to do felting and the old-fashioned rug hooking.

  4. Such great tips! I’ve felt in a rut for the past few months so I’ve been trying to get my creativity back. Love the idea of trying something new!
