How to Stay Productive While Traveling

While on my way to Phoenix, I started thinking about how we spend all this time on an airplane and how that time could be used, especially for any entrepreneur or side hustler! If you think that being on an airplane just means sitting there bored out of your mind and that there’s no way to be productive because there’s (typically) no WiFi, I’m here to tell you otherwise.

Since I knew that this was a longer flight, traveling from Philly to Las Vegas and ultimately to our destination in Phoenix, I made sure to brainstorm how I could use this extra time to be productive and work on my business. If you plan on traveling soon and are trying to think of ways you can use the extra time in the air to work on your biz, then you’ve come to the right place.

Here are some of my tips for how you can be productive while traveling and also take good care of yourself, because that is also very important while traveling. I also added in some photos from our trip to Phoenix 🙂

#1 Bring your laptop (if you have one)

Even though I can’t go on WiFi on the plane, mainly because I’m too cheap to pay for the additional WiFi charge, there are still so many ways I can work on my business. If you’re a blogger, this is the perfect opportunity to get some writing in with minimal distractions – other than maybe the occasional “sorry everyone, we’re experiencing some turbulence” during your flight or a baby crying, the flight is usually pretty quiet.

If you are also able to work on any client work or business work without the use of WiFi, bring that with you on the plane to do while you’re flying! During my flight to Phoenix, I had a new client that I was helping build a new resume for. I saved their current resume locally on my laptop and wrote down notes for what they were looking for, so during the flight I was able to work on their new resume! I live for this kind of productivity!

#2 Download Podcasts to Your Phone

This is the PERFECT time to binge some podcasts that you’ve been wanting to listen to or just haven’t had the time to catch up on. Download the podcast episodes to your phone before your trip and listen to them while you’re on the flight. I downloaded a whole bunch of business/career podcast episodes from some of my favorite podcasts for my flight to Phoenix and it kept me entertained for the entire flight. Plus, listening to podcasts always gives me new ideas/motivation and since I was on a longer flight I was able to start running with those new ideas.

And this kind of leads me to the next point…

#3 Brainstorm Ideas

How many times can you honestly say you had time to just sit there and brainstorm?! When I’m at home or at work, it can be hard to make time specifically for brainstorming. I’ll usually get an idea randomly during the workday and make note of it in my phone but I rarely get the time to dedicate just to brainstorming ideas.

While you’re on a flight, you don’t really have anywhere you can go and this makes it a great place to sit there and just come up with some new creative ideas for your biz.

This is also a great time to write down items in your planner, whether it’s upcoming deadlines, client work, blog posts, etc. – you can spend some quality time with your planner while you’re traveling. I took my Content Planner with me while I was traveling and made sure to spend some time planning while on our flight.

#4 Read a Self-Help or Business Book

Is there a book you’ve been meaning to read that you think will help you grow personally or one that you’ve been wanting to read for your biz? Bring it with you while you’re traveling and when you want to take some time to read – break out the book and enjoy! I recently won the “You are a Badass” book in a giveaway that GenTwenty was doing, which I was so excited about because I never win any raffles or prizes (it’s just my luck lol). “You are a Badass” is a book I’ve been wanting to read for a long time so while I was on my flight I would take breaks from doing “work” and would read for a little while. I actually made a pretty big dent in the book just by reading it during my flights.

PS – if you’re looking for an amazing self-help book, definitely check out the You Are a Badass book! I love how honest the author is and the strategies she gives you in the book really do help change your mindset.

#5 Drink Water!

This tip probably seems random, but honestly it’s a lifesaver and helps me stay energized while on a longer flight! What I do is bring an empty water bottle with me when I’m traveling and then fill it up at the water fountain in the airport before my flight leaves. This way I have water with me throughout the flight and can drink it whenever I’m thirsty! By having your own water, this means you don’t have to wait around for drinks to be served on your flight 🙂

I use my Swell water bottle everyday and even when I’m traveling, it’s by my side at all times. What’s perfect about these water bottles is that they keep your water cold for up to 24 hours and are very useful when traveling. Plus if you’re staying in a hotel, you may not have water bottles handy all the time and so if you bring your own, you can fill it up at the water fountain in the hotel (most hotels should have one) and that way you are always hydrated no matter what!

  1. I love your tips! There’s always something you can do to be productive while travelling. I’m in search for a lighter laptop because the one I currently have is to heavy to travel with. I’ll brainstorm blog ideas and write them in my phone. Also, I love the drinking water tip because that is so important and easily forgotten!

  2. ok girl i’m adding this to my ‘favorite links’ post for next tue as ive been traveling non stop since the year started and these tips def help me out! 🙂

  3. Being on a plane is one of my absolute favorite times to work on blog stuff! Not having wifi is actually a blessing in disguise because I can get a lot of writing done without distractions. I’ll brainstorm a list of blog post topics to write about and then just open a Google doc on my laptop and write away. I get so much done! I also use the time on planes to edit my photos. I’m a Disney blogger so I take a lot of pictures on my trips down there, and then on the way back I can use the 2.5 hour flight to edit them 🙂

  4. I wish I flew more often because that would mean I was traveling more often! I think it is a great opportunity to get some work done. Although my flights are rare enough that I enjoy just looking out the window.

  5. I don’t fly, but I do sometimes have to travel into the city about 90 minutes away. Connectivity is spotty in the mountains, so any work I do is offline. I like to write posts while hubby drives. It helps pass the time 🙂

  6. These are great tips! I recently took a bus when I went to visit my aunt in Wisconsin with my mom and part of the reason we took a bus was so that I could work and not drive. It was so nice to be able to get some video editing done for five hours each way instead of stare at the road.

  7. All of these tips are really good, except the laptop one. I try to not take it with me while I’m travelling (if it’s not business-related) because I’ll get lost scrolling on answering e-mails or even actually working.

  8. When flying, I always go to sleep because I get so bored (and I’ve taken my iPad and everything with me too!). I might do a round of In Flight Trivia, but for some reason, I can’t stay awake on a plane haha

  9. I use the time to catch up reading blogging/productivity ebooks that I never read at home (I personally hate ebooks, I’d rather read a blog or a real book- but traveling is the perfect excuse to download an ebook!). I also write blog posts sometimes, I wrote a few on my international flight home from London on my phone (no laptop). My thumbs hurt so bad when I was done but it was so nice to get so much work out of the way!

  10. I usually don’t get bored on a flight. I do many things (like reading, watching movies or playing games) But I always forget to do more productive things! I love the idea or brainstorming ideas. I’ll start to bring a notebook with me.

  11. These are great tips! Usually I’m super lazy while on the plane. I’ll read or listen to music or be asleep. I could definitely be listening to productive podcasts! Great post!
